Mommy’s Flour Tortillas


Okay dear friend, I will welcome you with a recipe you asked for… here it is, my basic flour tortilla recipe.   A loved go-to recipe of mine for all meals, even dessert.  Simple fry a bit longer and top with honey & cinnamon.  This recipe alone is great for our famous oven stuffed burritos!  Num Num!

Mommy’s Flour Tortillas 

4 Cups of flour

2-4 Tbl. of shortening or lard

(The recipe works with 2; however, we prefer softer tortilla so- 4!)

1 &1/2 Cups water

1 tsp. salt

2 tsp. baking powder

Cut lard into the flour.  Flour will be crumbling when the lard is evenly distributed.  Add salt and baking powder.  Stir and mix.  Add 1 cup of your water, mix.  Then gradually add your remainder water.  This is a perfect recipe for location.  I use little to no flour to roll out and place on ungreased skillet or lefse maker.  Just heat until bubbly and slightly brown, turn over.  These tortillas are fast and easy.   The recipe will roll approximately 18 thin ave. size tortilla (which I use for snacks) 

I double this recipe to make 9 XL thicker tortillas for the loaded stuffed burritos so they do not break.  These will serve a family of 7 for a hearty dinner and leftovers for lunch.
